Lower impact than was previously reported, says Chilean salmon farmer.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Multiexport Foods lost 120 tonnes of salmon affected by the microalgae bloom at its Apiao farm, located in the Quinchao commune in Chiloé, Southern Chile.

In a statement, the Chilean salmon farmer provided more details on the event. It said that the mortality was caused by an “oceanographic event of low oxygen concentration”.

The impact was lower than the 120 tonnes initially reported by local economic secretariat Francisco Muñoz in the publication BioBio. 24.7 tonnes of fish were lost, 83 tonnes of that was Atlantic salmon.

On Tuesday, Salmones Camanchaca reported that it expects to take a USD 3.5 million hit from 162,000 salmon lost to algae bloom at two of its sites, east from Multiexport Foods’ site in Southern Chile.
