North-centre fishery to open 22 April, following positive biomass assessment.

Peruvian authorities have set the quota for the first anchovy fishing season of 2025 in the North-centre region at 3 million metric tonnes, according to Ministerial Resolution Nº 00148-2025-PRODUCE issued on 14 April.

The season will officially open on 22 April, following a final round of biomass analysis—known as a Eureka operation—scheduled for 19–21 April. The decision is based on assessments by IMARPE, Peru’s marine research institute.

“This quota is the highest since 2018 and 2011 and signals a healthy biomass,” said Dr Enrico Bachis, Market Research Director at marine ingredients organisation IFFO.

The news comes amid strong year-on-year growth in global fishmeal and fish oil output. IFFO reports that cumulative fishmeal production through February 2025 rose by 40% compared to the same period in 2024, with Peru contributing significantly to the increase. Chile, the USA, Spain and several African producers also posted improved figures.

Fish oil production showed similar growth, up 38% year on year through February. All regions reported gains except Northern Europe.

IFFO’s figures are based on member data from key producing countries including Peru, Chile, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, and South Africa, representing around 40% of global fishmeal and 50% of fish oil output.
