Land-based salmon farmer Proximar has reported a breach in the bio media filter support in module C of its grow-out facility near Mount Fuji, Japan.

The incident, which occurred on November 20, did not result in fish mortality, the company confirmed in a statement. Measures were implemented to maintain water quality, with biological levels remaining stable.

The C module housed approximately 300 tonnes of biomass, which is now being transferred to other operational modules, a process expected to be completed within a week. To mitigate the disruption, Proximar is accelerating the startup of module D.

Repairs to module C will delay its return to operation. To manage capacity, selected batches of fish will be harvested earlier than planned, resulting in a revised harvest target of approximately 4,465 tonnes HOG for 2024–2025, down 5% from the previous guidance of 4,700 tonnes HOG.

Proximar will also upgrade its other operational modules to prevent similar incidents, though this is not expected to impact ongoing production.

The company has contacted its insurers regarding coverage for damages and related losses. Updated information will be provided in the next trading update, scheduled for early January 2025.

Proximar operates a land-based salmon farming facility near Mount Fuji, leveraging high-quality groundwater and proximity to Japanese fish markets to reduce costs and carbon footprint. The company began production in 2022 and completed its first harvest in September 2024.
