Farmed rainbow trout escape after shark attack

The scale of the escape, from one of fish farmer Osland Havbruk’s sites in the Sognefjord, Western Norway, has not been clarified.

The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries received a report of the escape of rainbow trout on 25 October. The escape occured after the fish farm was attacked by dogfish (squalus acanthias).

The fish had an average weight of about 3.5 kilos.

The company has so far recovered in excess of 30 rainbow trout. Due to the presence of dogfish, which is a threatened species, only limited fishing in an attempt to recapture the trout is permitted, according to a message from the Directorate of Fisheries.
