Salmon farming included in list of British Columbia essential services

Provincial state declared a state of emergency last week over coronavirus.

In a statement on Thursday, B.C. Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth released a list of essential and non-essential services

Food and agriculture service providers including aquaculture and the Pacific coasts billion-dollar salmon farming industry that comes with it is now on the list.

“This designation is a significant responsibility, and one we take seriously. BC’s salmon farmers and local businesses that support aquaculture are stepping up to do our part to ensure our food supply remains robust during this pandemic,” wrote the BC Salmon Farmer’s Association in response.

B.C.’s salmon farmers produce about three-quarters of the salmon harvested in the province each year – more than 87,000 tonnes annually.
