A study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences suggests that salmon oil may be an effective treatment for the symptoms of long Covid.
Norwegian biotechnology firm Hofseth Biocare has announced that its salmon oil product, OmeGo, may offer health benefits for individuals infected with Covid-19.
The company conducted a study, now published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, suggesting that the oil could improve immune response and reduce inflammation in people with mild to moderate Covid-19.
The study indicated that participants who took the salmon oil supplement experienced significantly lower levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are critical in mitigating the acute inflammatory response linked to Covid-19 complications.
Additionally, the oil appeared to help maintain a balanced immune response, improve lung barrier function, and enhance immunological memory, potentially contributing to a stronger and more durable immune system.
Long Covid is thought to affect an estimated 65 million people worldwide.
Dr. Crawford Currie, lead author and Head of Medical R&D at HBC, commented, “The Covid-19 pandemic cast immune health under the spotlight and since then, consumers worldwide have been exploring solutions to proactively boost their viral defences. The broad-spectrum benefits of our enzymatically liberated salmon oil stand as a beacon of hope, with this latest study demonstrating its power to modulate the immune response, aid recovery and reduce the risk of severe outcomes.”
The study notes that further research is required to fully understand the oil’s effects on long Covid, which is characterized by lasting symptoms that persist for at least two months after infection and impact daily functioning.
