Sanford gets $8 million government loan to build RAS salmon hatchery

1.5 million smolt capacity.

Stuff reports that Sanford is building the first stage of a land-based RAS salmon hatchery for the growing of king salmon at Ocean Beach in Bluff, New Zealand.

One of New Zealand’s major producers of king salmon is getting a NZD 8 million (EUR 4.5 million) loan from Provincial Growth Fund.

Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones said that construction will start in October.

“The capacity of the salmon hatchery will be built up in stages, with the first stage having the capability to produce up to 1.5 million smolt. The company has an immediate need for about 1 million of the initial smolt production for its salmon farm on Stewart Island/Rakiura and the balance of 500,000 smolt will be available to be sold at commercial rates to other industry players.’’

Last week, SalmonBusiness reported that Sanford had lodged a consent with authorities to create five small open ocean farms. This would eventually increase King salmon production in at its operations in Southland, New Zealand’s southernmost region, from 3800 tonnes to 25,000 tonnes annually.
