More than 650 pupils from Lochaber will have the chance to explore career opportunities in the Scottish salmon farming industry at a careers event to be held at Lochaber High School on October 2.

Organised by Salmon Scotland, Mowi Scotland, and Developing the Young Workforce West Highland, the event aims to introduce students to the wide range of jobs available in the growing aquaculture sector.

Local employers, including Bakkafrost Scotland, Scottish Sea Farms, AKVA, and Gael Force, will be present to showcase careers ranging from technicians and farm assistants to business support roles such as finance and IT.

Pupils will also get hands-on experience with interactive activities, including VR goggles offering virtual salmon farm tours and an interactive career game called “I am MOWI.”

The Scottish salmon sector contributes £119 million annually to the local economy of Skye, Lochaber, and Badenoch, directly employing over 500 people and supporting more than 410 local businesses.

Tavish Scott, CEO of Salmon Scotland, emphasized the sector’s role in creating high-paying jobs in coastal communities: “In many places, the salmon farm at the end of the road keeps shops and schools open, and helps to support the wider community.”

Mowi Scotland’s community engagement officer, Jayne Mackay, and Jennifer Grant, programme manager at DYW West Highland, highlighted the importance of such events in showcasing the long-term career potential within aquaculture, including opportunities for global career advancement.

The event will feature the popular Mowi Scotland salmon wagon, offering pupils a chance to sample Scottish salmon dishes, alongside participation from local logistics company Ferguson Transport.
