The new Danish Ocean Cluster is set to officially launch with a kick-off event on September 25, 2024, at the North Sea Science Park (Nordsøen Forskerpark) in Hirtshals.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Thor Sigfusson, PhD, from the Iceland Ocean Cluster. Sigfusson, who has played a role in promoting the sustainable use of fish waste, will share his insights and experiences on building a more innovative and sustainable seafood industry.

The Danish Ocean Cluster aims to join the international network of ocean clusters that includes prominent members such as the New England Ocean Cluster, the Alaska Ocean Cluster, and the Long Island Sound Ocean Cluster. These organizations focus on bringing together startups, students, and blue economy innovators to collaborate on sustainable maritime initiatives.

The key projects currently underway include:

  1. Study Trips to Iceland and Canada: Planning and organizing study trips to these countries to explore best practices and innovations in the blue economy.
  2. Supporting the Salmon Hub in Hirtshals: Contributing to the development of Hirtshals as a key center for salmon farming and related industries.
  3. Strengthening Commercial Relations: Enhancing commercial ties within the blue sector across Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Canada, and the USA.
  4. Assisting in the Establishment of Companies: Providing support for the establishment of companies, particularly from Norway, in Danish industrial fishing ports.
  5. Participation in the Accelerator Project 2025-2026: Collaborating with DTU Aqua on a project focused on value chains and innovation within sustainable fishery.
  6. Partnering in the Nordic Ocean Opportunity Project: Conducting a screening of maritime capital in the Nordic countries, with a specific focus on Denmark.
  7. Participation in the InterReg Project SCI (Scandinavian Circular Industrial Parks): Engaging in this project, led by Skagen Uddannelsescenter, which focuses on circular industrial practices in Scandinavia, running from 2024 to 2026.

The event in Hirtshals will provide a platform for industry professionals, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts to learn more about the opportunities within the blue economy and how the Danish Ocean Cluster plans to contribute to the global effort in promoting sustainability in the maritime sector. Attendees can find more information and sign up for the event on the Danish Ocean Cluster’s official website.
