Study reveals on average, one worker dies every month from a work-related injury in Chilean salmon industry

36 salmon workers died between 2013 and April 2019.

Presented ahead of International Labour Day – environmental group Centro Ecocéanos claims that it has documented and collated 36 work related deaths related to salmon farming in Chile, reports El Desconcierto.

The numbers were presented in a press conference with salmon worker unions from farming regions Llanquihue and Chiloé – la Confederación Nacional de Trabajadores del Salmón (CONATRASAL), la Federación de Trabajadores del Salmón de Quellón (FETRASAL) and la Federación de Trabajadores Marítimos de Chile (FESIMAR).

The unions criticised working conditions and called on them to improve as the industry grows.
