Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA) members generated over US$3.4 billion in economic activity in 2022 and employed more than 16,800 Canadians.

A new report from CAIA underscores the Canadian salmon farming sector’s position as a global leader in sustainable aquaculture practices.

The inaugural Sustainability Report, which covers data from 2022, highlights the industry’s commitment to transparency, environmental responsibility, and sustainable production.

Timothy Kennedy, President and CEO of CAIA, emphasized the sector’s ambition to become “the most sustainable animal protein product in the world,” noting that the report serves as a critical tool to demonstrate progress across the country.

The report outlines key performance indicators in seven priority areas: fish health, climate change, sustainable feed, food security, traceability, ocean health, and public reporting.

Notable achievements include a historic low in fish escapes, Canadian farm-raised salmon having the lowest carbon footprint among major farmed animal species, and 100% traceability of salmon production, ensuring product transparency for consumers.

In addition, the report highlights ongoing commitments to improving fish health, sourcing 100% sustainable-certified feed, and supporting wild salmon populations.

Kennedy acknowledged that while the sector has made significant strides, there is still more to do.

“While we celebrate our achievements, we are acutely aware that there is always more work to be done. With the right regulatory environment and a commitment to innovation, we will continue to advance the sector’s performance, responding to challenges and ensuring a healthy, secure, and high-quality Canadian source of food for all Canadians,” he said.

The report, funded through the AgriAssurance Program under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, will be published annually to track the sector’s long-term sustainability goals.
