The salmon price turns around after a five-week continuous fall

Recoil after heavy period.

“High speed in the salmon price now. There is talk of four kroner (EUR 0.4) up,” a fish farmer wrote in an text message to SalmonBusiness.

“The salmon price is going up now. Four kroner, but it is still early,” said an exporter.

“Four kroner up,” repeated another exporter, before he added: “But I do not think we get the money back. Then we rather reduce the quantity. This week we paid 38-39 kroner for 3-4, 40-41 kroner for 4-5 and 43 kroner for 5-6. That implies prices of 43, 45 and 47 for 3-6 kilos.”

“A part is bought for freezing. Those that are freezing fish must have a favorable price, because they will store it for half a year. No one stores fish for 50 kroner,” he said.

“And then the currency (EUR vs NOK) is down: 10.63. Last week it was 10.78,” he said about the euro/NOK exchange rate.

“The fish farmers want even higher prices,” commented another exporter. “There is talk of 5-6 kroner (EUR 0.5-0.6).”

SalmonBusiness’ industrial sources refer to the following farmgate prices, for the most traded weight classes, for delivery in the coming week:

  • 3-4 kg NOK 43-44 (EUR 4.0-4.1)
  • 4-5 kg NOK 45-46 (EUR 4.2-4.3)
  • 5-6 kg NOK 47-48 (EUR 4.4-4.5)
