A tragic accident occurred Wednesday afternoon during a routine diving operation carried out by the vessel KB Floing at Gjerdinga in Nærøysund municipality, Norway.

The diving vessel, which was staffed by a crew of five, immediately alerted emergency services upon receiving news of the incident. Several emergency units responded to the scene, and the company activated its crisis management team, according to local media outlet ytringen.no.

The diver, a man in his twenties, was recovered from the water by colleagues, who initiated life-saving first aid. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel shortly after 14:30.

“This is a deeply tragic event that has affected us all profoundly. Our thoughts are first and foremost with the bereaved,” said Managing Director Are Brekk in a statement. “At the same time, our focus is on supporting our approximately 60 employees, who have tragically lost a colleague and friend.”

The diver’s next of kin have been informed and are being offered ongoing support by the company. Authorities, including the police and the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority, have been notified, and the company remains in active dialogue with them.

This incident marks a somber moment for KB-Gruppen, which was acquired by Smir Group in February 2024 as part of a strategic investment to expand its capabilities in submersible cage systems. The acquisition included the service vessel KB Rokk and the high-speed diving vessel KB Storm, as well as the experienced crew and management team led by founder and CEO Ola Krystad.
