Fish counter data signals encouraging salmon returns in Tweed system.

Infra-red fish counters installed on tributaries of Scotland’s River Tweed recorded the second-highest number of salmon on record in 2024, according to data from fly fishing permit and accommodation booking service FishPal.

The counters, which use infra-red scanners and cameras to monitor fish passing through narrow weirs, have been in place on some parts of the Tweed District since 2000. Currently, three counters are installed on the tributaries Whiteadder, Gala Water, and Ettrick. The monitoring data indicates significant increases in salmon numbers in two of these rivers.

On the Gala Water, 2,168 salmon were recorded, well above the average of 1,363. The Whiteadder also recorded 890 salmon, compared to an average of 628. The Ettrick also saw an increase from the previous year, according to FishPal.

“The Tweed is the second-longest river in Scotland and produces more fly-caught salmon than any other river in Britain,” said Will Draper, Head of FishPal. “The wide stretches of the main Tweed are difficult to monitor, but the weirs on these tributaries provide ideal locations for fish counters.”

The camera system also allows monitoring for Saprolegnia, a fungal infection affecting salmon. FishPal noted that while mild cases of the infection may appear unsightly, they can heal under suitable conditions. The monitoring data could help track and manage the disease in the future.

FishPal also highlighted that the tributaries where the counters are installed represent 15.4% of the Tweed District’s catchment area, providing insight into broader fish population trends. The findings come as spring salmon fishing increases across Scotland and Ireland, with multiple Tweed beats reporting strong catches.

FishPal noted that Birgham Dub was a standout performer last week, producing ten salmon, while Lower Birgham, Hendersyde, and Boleside also recorded multiple catches. The 2024 River Tweed opening ceremony in February, led by The Duchess of Roxburghe, marked the start of the season with the traditional whisky blessing of the river.

Salmon numbers in monitored Tweed tributaries, 2024:

  • Gala Water: 2,168 salmon (long-term average: 1,363)
  • Whiteadder: 890 salmon (long-term average: 628)
  • Ettrick: Increase on previous year
