Baring Farsund has reached a milestone in its land-based salmon farming project with the delivery of a complete recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) module, transported by sea to its facility in Farsund, Norway.

The modules, measuring 22 and 30 meters, were shipped from the Leirvik AS shipyard on March 6 and arrived at their destination on March 8. According to supplier Searas, this marks the first time pre-built, standardized RAS modules have been transported by sea for installation in a production facility.

Baring Farsund aims to establish what it describes as “Norway’s most sustainable salmon production facility.” Once fully operational, the land-based farm in Lundevågen is expected to produce 24,000 tonnes of salmon annually. The first phase of the project, set to begin operations in autumn 2025, will produce 1,200 tonnes of post-smolt per year for delivery to coastal fish farmers.

The project, which involves an investment of NOK 300 million ($27.8 million), will utilize Optiras recirculation technology, developed by Leirvik Group and Searas Holding. The system has been tested at full scale at Bremnes Seashore’s facility on Bømlo.
