Wet weather leads to Scotland’s best wild salmon run in years

The 2024 Scottish Atlantic salmon run is showing significant improvement compared to recent years, according to angling expert Will Draper, Head of FishPal.

After a slow start due to excessive rain earlier in the year, the current run is now in full swing, with rivers filled to capacity, allowing salmon to reach their traditional spawning grounds, sometimes over 60 miles inland, according to FishPal’s Draper.

FishPal is an online service that provides a platform for anglers to book fly fishing permits and access information about fishing opportunities on rivers across the UK.

Draper noted that the colder and wetter spring, though initially a challenge, has ultimately benefited the salmon run, resulting in higher catches across many of Scotland’s major rivers, including the Spey, Tay, Dee, and Tweed.

‘Following a series of warmer and drier springs and summers, 2024’s wetter weather means June/July’s run has been much larger than in recent years. That’s being borne out by the fact that anglers’ catches are also strongly up across most of the bigger rivers and are now comfortably the best for four or five years.”

FishPal, a service that facilitates online bookings for fly fishing permits, still has availability for anglers looking to fish on Scotland’s iconic rivers as well as lesser-known streams throughout the summer and autumn seasons.
