Government to Release Long-Awaited Aquaculture Report on Thursday.
The Norwegian government will this week publish its long-anticipated aquaculture report, outlining long-term plans for the country’s aquaculture sector.
Minister of Fisheries and the Oceans, Marianne Sivertsen Næss (Labour), is expected to present the report on Thursday. It is expected to address key issues including the structure of the permit system.
The report has been in development for several years, dating back to the tenure of former Fisheries Minister Per Sandberg (Progress Party), who served from 2015 to 2018. At the time, Sandberg signalled the need to reform the permit system, particularly the widespread use of time-limited and free licences such as those for R&D, broodstock, display, and education purposes.
These licences currently account for nearly one-fifth of Norwegian salmon production and come with varying conditions and requirements.
Industry stakeholders are watching closely for potential changes that could significantly reshape the regulatory landscape for Norwegian aquaculture.
